Streetsfilms recently released a new video titled Portland’s Bicycle Boulevards Become Neighborhood Greenways. It’s worth watching if Bicycle Boulevards are something you’re interested in.
I think the video does a good job pointing out who are the anticipated users of bicycle boulevards. Bicycle boulevards are designed to accommodate all cyclists, not just the fearless daily commuters. In the comments of my last post, we had some discussion about whether or not the newest bicycle boulevard in Minneapolis would get used by experienced cyclists that are already comfortable cycling on streets with heavier traffic.
Time will answer that question for us, but ultimately, I’m not sure it matters. We shouldn’t use bicycle boulevards as a method to lure cyclists away from other routes. We should build them if we think that they can appeal to new or inexperienced riders.
